Busy week for Mercedes-Benz and AMG this week. The German Marque showing off a car with the most powerful version of its 4.0-liter, twin turbocharged motor yet, as well as something completely left-field, a ‘Bakkie’.
The 2018 E63S will produce a staggering 603hp allowing it to move it’s rather substantial mass from 0 to 100 km/h is 3.3 seconds! Power will be delivered to all four wheels via AMG’s nine-speed Speedshift multi-clutch transmission but interestingly Mercedes hinted at a drift mode that will turn the E63 into a “purely rear-wheel drive”.
Last night Mercedes showed the world their new Concept X-Class Pickup truck. Two variants were shown, Powerful Adventure appeals more to the tradition rugged working man and Stylish Explorer is aimed at a more refined clientele, we assume ML buyers who need a large cargo bed?
This is obviously new territory for manufacturers like Mercedes so we’ll now more about their target demographic closer to production. The styling up from is very Mercedes and looks like the GT. The rear taillight assemblies vary between the two models with the Stylish Explorer getting an interesting single, wraparound LED Design.
The X-Class shares underpinnings with the Nissan Navara and upcoming Renault Alaskan, yes there is some sort of Mercedes-Renault-Nissan alliance apparently?
We should see a production version in 2017, with our very own sunny South Africa being one of the primary target markets.
How do you think these will be received in RSA where the Hilux and Ranger have almost cult-like following? Will soccer moms want an upmarket bakkie? Leave your comments below.
